Helpful tips for getting started with buying succulents or expanding your succulent gardening.
Hello sweet bloggy friends! Is it really already the beginning of October? Because my outdoor garden is all but finished for the year #blackthumb, so now I can start to think more about gardening indoors. If you follow me on instagram then you’ve seen me starting a few succulent gardens that will be coming inside soon. If you're new to buying succulents, or are wishing you had a few more around, then read on... I'll share my tips for getting the most bang for your buck in succulent gardening!
1. Buy them very small
If you shop at your local greenhouse or garden centre, you’ll be able to buy these very tiny succulents, also called plugs. They’ll be displayed in huge trays, and sometimes come without a pot, so handle them very gently. The benefit is that they’re really inexpensive so you can head home with more plants. Start growing them now and soon enough they’ll be a good size for transplanting into a bigger container, or if you're lucky, dividing up again into several plants!
2. Buy them with babies
If you’re buying a bigger sized plant, look for ones that already have little “babies” growing in the pot with them. Back at home, these little guys can be carefully separated and planted into a pot of their own. Boom, you get several plants for the price of one, the gift that keeps on giving.
3. Buy a variety
First of all because it’s fun. Second because different pots and containers lend themselves to different styles of plants. So no matter what kind of container you decide to use, you’ll have something perfect to plant in it. Third, you may want to put together a little tabletop garden of succulents, and then you’ll want a good variety for interest.4. Buy one exotic one
You’ll see that there are lots of more common succulents that look pretty similar. Above and beyond choosing a variety, try also to have a few showstopper plants. You may have to look to the display of cactus that will be close by. They add interest to a little tabletop garden, or transform a plain container into a special gift.
5. Buy them now
The sooner you can get them growing and established, the better! If you start now, you’ll have time to enjoy the plants in case you were growing them to give away. You may get a few babies to move into a new pot. You may even get one to bloom for you!
Happy shopping and planting!
