So I wonder if anyone uses the IKEA BEKVAM spice racks as spice racks? Not if Pinterest is any indicator. Maybe IKEA will start selling them in a different part of the store someday.

A little while ago I posted about my inspiration to update my kid’s bedroom from toddler to tween. I already showed you how I organized the closet with a laundry system and chalkboard labels here. Now let’s revisit the update with this little desk organizer DIY. (You may have seen a sneak peek here on Instagram.)
It’s a tiny bedroom, as I said, and I moved a console table from elsewhere in the house into the room to use as a desk. (It was from IKEA too but they no longer sell this model. I’m using this console table in it’s place now.) The upside of using a console table as a desk is that it takes up minimal floor space, but the downside is it has minimal work space. So I decided to move as much storage off the desk surface as possible to make more room to work.

IKEA spice racks + milk paint + the dollar store to the rescue.
* finished project *
Rather than leave the bare wood, I decided to paint the shelves with Coal Black milk paint. Milk paint adheres so well on bare wood, and with the powdered form you can mix your own consistency to make it as sheer or opaque as you want. I mixed it according to the package directions and it left just some of the grain showing through after two coats. I finished it with a coat of clear furniture wax.

Assemble it according to the handy IKEA instructions. If you’re not an experienced IKEA assembler, don’t worry. I promise you this is one of the very easiest assemblies to do. Trust me I’ve seen the whole gamut, right up to full-on kitchen assembly.
Then for storage in the spice racks, I bought these dollar store pencil containers which fit perfectly inside the shelf. Three of the containers fit easily into one of the shelves, four containers fit perfectly! Tip: don’t buy the more expensive versions from the organizing stores, they’re too wide to fit!

So there you have an inexpensive and attractive storage solution for a small desk surface. The hardest part is finding the IKEA spice racks in stock. Seriously.
